Starry night sky for stargazing

MALTA /

BEST LOCATIONS:

DWEJRA BAY AND CLIFFS / LOCATION - Western coast of Gozo

Why it's the best: Officially recognized as a Dark Sky Heritage Area, this is arguably the only place in the Maltese archipelago where the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. The towering cliffs block out much of the encroaching light pollution from surrounding towns.

Best for: Milky Way viewing, astrophotography, and meteor showers.

Details: Open, rugged, and remote. You'll need to drive or take a taxi to the area near the Inland Sea or the Fungus Rock watchtower

DINGLI CLIFFS / LOCATION: southwest coast of Malta

Why it's the best: As the highest point in Malta, these cliffs face the open, dark expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, offering excellent conditions without light polluting the southern horizon.

Best for: Accessible stargazing. You can set up a telescope right off the roadside (Triq Panoramika) or walk the trails towards the limits of Rabat.

Details: It is very exposed, so dress warmly if the wind picks up. Consider pairing your stargazing with a sunset dinner at BobbiLynd or The Cliffs Interpretation Centre.

TA' CENC CLIFFS/ LOCATION: Southeast of Sanat, Gozo

Why it's great: These sheer, dramatic cliffs tower 130 meters above the sea. Because it requires a brief walk through the garigue (Maltese scrubland) away from main roads, it eliminates most side-light from Gozitan towns.

Best for: Seclusion and sweeping southern and eastern sky views.

Details: The terrain can be uneven, so bring a reliable red-light headlamp or flashlight and wear sturdy footwear.

OTHER NOTABLE LOCATIONS /

Qbajjar Salt Pans (Gozo)

The Vibe: A tranquil coastal landscape with stunning sea-level night sky reflections.

Why it’s great: While looking directly north over the ocean, the lack of light pollution allows for incredible stargazing. The shallow water in the salt pans on calm, clear nights can also provide beautiful, mirrored reflections of the stars.

Tips: Combine your stargazing trip with an evening coastal walk along the Marsalforn to Wied il-Għasri route.

Mellieħa (Rdum tal-Madonna)

The undeveloped, northern-facing coastal ridges in the limits of Mellieħa act as a shield against southern light pollution, providing a crisp night sky.
