PIC DU MIDI / LOCATION - PYRENEES
World-Class Dark Sky Reserve: In 2013, Pic du Midi became the first site in Europe to be certified as an International Dark Sky Reserve. This status protects 3,300 square kilometers from light pollution, making the Milky Way clearly visible to the naked eye.
Extreme Altitude & Clarity: At 2,877 meters, you are above the dense, turbulent atmosphere. This provides exceptional "seeing" conditions (atmospheric stability), allowing celestial objects to appear remarkably crisp and sharp compared to sea-level viewing.
Pro-Grade Telescopes: The observatory, famous for solar and planetary research, is equipped with impressive tools, including the Bernard Lyot Telescope and a 400mm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope housed in the Charvin dome for visitor use.
The "Sea of Clouds" Effect: Because of its height, a thick blanket of clouds often settles below the summit, blocking lower-altitude light while leaving the skies directly above the peak crystal clear and pitch black.
CEVENNES NATIONAL PARK/ LOCATION: stretching across Lozère, Gard, Ardèche, and Aveyron.
STATUS: NATIONAL PARK
Europe’s largest International Dark Sky Reserve
The park actively enforces low light pollution to preserve the area's natural darkness. The Mont Aigoual weather observatory is a highly recommended and popular starting point for skywatchers.

MILLEVACHES REGIONAL NATURAL PARK / LOCATION: Limousin region
STATUS: DARK SKY RESERVE
Unmatched Visibility: The park provides some of the absolute darkest night skies in Western Europe.
Dedicated Viewing Sites: The park has established 11 accessible, designated observation spots (four are particularly popular in the Haute-Corrèze area) to help you set up and get the best possible view of the cosmos.
Locations like Puy la Besse and Roches Brunagères near Lac de Vassivière, as well as Puy de l'Aiguille in Feniers, are well-known, elevated observation platforms perfect for stargazing.
The area's strict anti-light pollution measures not only protect the night sky but also shield rare local wetlands, peat bogs, and nocturnal wildlife from artificial light interference
