BEST LOCATIONS:

PALLAS-YLLÄSTANTURI NATIONAL PARK/ LOCATION: Finnish Lapland, northwestern Finland

STATUS: NATIONAL PARK

HIGHLIGHTS:

Incredible Dark Skies: Finland features some of the lowest levels of light pollution in Europe, boasting Bortle 1 and 2 zones (which is the darkest classification possible). Even in the south, areas away from major cities offer brilliant views.

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis): Because Finland stretches high into the Arctic Circle, it is one of the best places in the world to see the auroras. They are most prominent during the peak months of September–October and February–March.

The Milky Way: The clarity of the night sky in regions like Lapland is so high that the Milky Way is clearly visible to the naked eye, a rare experience for most of the world.

Glass Igloos and Comfort: Because stargazing in the winter involves freezing temperatures, Finland pioneered luxury glass igloos. These warm accommodations allow you to comfortably watch the starry night sky and dancing auroras right from your bed

URHO KEKKONEN NATIONAL PARK/ LOCATION: northeastern Finnish Lapland

STATUS: NATIONAK PARK

HIGHLIGHTS:

Zero Light Pollution: Situated far from urban centers and artificial city lights, the park provides an unobstructed, pitch-black canvas for stargazing.

Vivid Auroras: Its extreme northern latitude in Finnish Lapland puts it directly in the auroral oval, offering frequent and spectacular displays of the Northern Lights.

Clear Starry Skies: During autumn and winter, the crisp, cold arctic air reduces atmospheric distortion, making planets, the Milky Way, and constellations (like Orion, Cassiopeia, and the Big Dipper) look exceptionally sharp.

The "Midnight Sun" Shift: Stargazing takes on a completely different feel during the autumn season (late August through September) when nights return and you can see a starry sky reflecting off local lakes.

Immersive Wilderness: You can experience the night sky in total silence by combining it with snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, or resting at a traditional wilderness hut

OULANKA NATIONAL PARK/ LOCATION: northeastern Finland, spanning the municipalities of Kuusamo and Salla

STATUS: NATIONAL PARK

HIGHLIGHTS:

High Aurora Borealis Activity: Because Oulanka sits in Northern Ostrobothnia and borders the edge of Finnish Lapland, it is directly in the auroral zone. The dark skies make it an exceptional location for witnessing the Northern Lights ripple across the Arctic night.

Magical Winter Landscapes: During the winter months (December to March), the park transforms into a snowy wonderland. The fast-flowing rivers of Oulanka create roaring rapids and mist that freeze over into breathtaking formations, setting a dramatic backdrop against the starry, moonlit skies.

Guided Night-Sky Adventures: You can elevate your skywatching with local experts who navigate the snowy hills and fells. Tours often include night-time snowshoeing through silent pine forests, warming up with traditional berry juice by an open fire, and learning local Arctic myths

SYRJÄVAARA STAR PARK/ LOCATION: Northern Savonia

STATUS: DARK SKY RESERVE

HIGHLIGHTS:

Unobstructed Hilltop Views: Situated on an open, elevated hilltop, the park provides expansive views stretching 30 to 45 kilometers in every direction, particularly to the north and west.

Optimal Aurora Viewing: Its remote geographic location provides a direct, light-pollution-free view of the auroral oval, making it an excellent spot for viewing the Northern Lights.

Visible Deep-Sky Objects: Thanks to the incredibly dark natural environment, the Milky Way sparkles vividly, and the Andromeda Galaxy can even be spotted with the naked eye.

No Local Light Waste: The village and immediate surroundings maintain a zero-waste light policy, preserving the natural nocturnal environment as a protected resource

EXPERT STARGAZING EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATORIES

  • Basecamp Oulanka (near Kuusaku): Located near the Arctic Circle, this remote wilderness base offers guided night-time snowshoe walks with the Milky Way stretching directly overhead.

  • Levi Adventures: If you are staying in Levi, you can book local Northern Lights Adventure & Telescope Stargazing Experience where local guides take you out onto vast frozen lakes with high-powered telescopes.

  • Hankasalmi Observatory: Located in the Jyväskylä region (one of the darkest regions in southern Finland), this is a major hub for stellar research. The local astronomical society offers scheduled stargazing and telescope viewings.
