HIGHLIGHTS:
Exceptional Dark Skies: "hidden gem" in the Adriatic, thousands of stars, and sometimes the entire Milky Way may be seen with the naked eye.
Active Light Pollution Control: The island has replaced over 200 public lights with eco-friendly lamps, ensuring nearly zero light pollution. Currently working toward official certification as a Dark Sky Park.
Ideal Viewpoints: The island features high-altitude vantage points, such as Hum Hill (the highest peak) and the Galičine viewpoint, which offer unobstructed, panoramic views.
Organized Astronomy Tours: Lastovo Nature Park hosts guided stargazing tours 2–3 times a week, featuring expert explanations and telescope observations, particularly during summer.
PETROVA GORA / LOCATION: CENTRAL CROATIA, Highest peak: Mali Petrovac, (512 meters)
HIGHLIGHTS:
Exceptional Dark Skies: As the first certified International Dark Sky Place in Croatia, the area is carefully protected against light pollution, allowing for clear views of celestial phenomena.
Prime Location & Accessibility: Located only about 90 minutes from Zagreb, it is easily reachable for a quick getaway, unlike some more remote, darker locations.
Iconic Photography Site: The ruins of the massive, stainless-steel WWII monument to the Uprising of the People of Kordun and Banija at Veliki Petrovac (512 meters) provide a surreal backdrop for nightscape photographers.
Annual Star Party: Every September, during the New Moon, the area hosts the Petrova Gora Star Party, which includes telescopes for public use, astrophotography competitions, and education.
Natural Setting: The park is located within one of Croatia's most preserved forest landscapes, offering a quiet, serene environment.
JELSA, HVAR ISLAND / LOCATION: SOUTHERN ADRIATIC SEA
HIGHLIGHTS:
Award-Winning Dark Skies: designated an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International in 2022. Over 82% of its public lighting was modified to be fully shielded and eco-friendly.
Optimal Viewing Locations: The nearby inland village of Humac—a hamlet without electricity—is a top spot for viewing the night sky.
Proximity to "Cosmic" Views: The Milky Way is frequently visible with the naked eye from local beaches and coastal paths.
Romantic Atmosphere: Stargazing is popular on the local beaches, often combined with a warm, late-evening swim under the stars, where, according to local experience, glowing bioluminescent plankton can sometimes be seen.
Active Astronomy Focus: Jelsa hosts events like "Astronomy Days" in collaboration with the Croatian Astronomical Union. The nearby village of Humac features a meteor camera connected to the Global Meteor Network.
SVETI URBAN, MEĐIMURJE / LOCATION: NORTHERN PART OF MEĐIMURJE COUNTY
HIGHLIGHTS:
Extremely Low Light Pollution: As part of the tranquil, rural landscape of upper Međimurje, Sveti Urban offers dark skies free from the glare of large cities, allowing for clear views of the Milky Way and constellations.
Picturesque Hilltop Scenery: Located near the Mađerkin Breg lookout, stargazers can enjoy panoramic views from high elevations (361 meters above sea level), surrounded by vineyards and nature.
Peaceful Atmosphere: The region is known for its quiet, "Hobbiton-like" green scenery, providing a serene environment perfect for night observation without distractions.
Ideal Location for "Astro-tourism": It is positioned among the wine roads of upper Međimurje, allowing visitors to combine a relaxing wine-tasting experience with evening stargazing
UČKA MOUNTAIN, LOCATION: WESTERN CROATIA, Highest peak: Vojak (1,401m)
HIGHLIGHTS:
Low Light Pollution: Located within a protected Nature Park, the higher elevations of Učka offer dark skies
Panoramic Vantage Point: The Vojak peak features a historic stone tower, providing a stable, 360-degree open view
Unique Atmospheric Conditions: The intersection of maritime and mountain climates can produce very clear nights, especially during colder months or after rains/bura winds
Accessible High Elevation: Visitors can reach high-altitude viewing spots relatively easily, with a paved road leading near the top and a shorter,, roughly 90-minute hike from the Poklon Pass.
Quiet Atmosphere: Apart from a few weekenders in the nearby highest village of Mala Učka, the area is sparse and quiet, providing the necessary silence and solitude for serious stargazing
PAPUK NATURE PARK / LOCATION: EASTERN CROATIA, SLAVONIA REGION, Highest peak: Petrov Vrh (614m)

Minimal Light Pollution: The area is protected from artificial light, offering a true, dark sky
Ideal for Astronomy & Astrophotography: The area is a hub for star lovers, with Petrov vrh (9 km from Daruvar) providing a perfect, elevated vantage point for observing and photographing space objects.
Convenience and Access: The mountain lodge on Petrov vrh offers convenient, nearby lodging and access to electricity, practical for setting up telescopes and equipment.
